The Good Outweigh The Bad... - 11/4/2019
I've lived in Mount Vernon for almost eight years and it's alright. The good and bad weigh out. The goods being the festivals and events are amazing. I've gone to the Dan Emmett Festival for the past five years due to being in the band and the First Fridays are pretty amazing with the different things going on. Some of the bad things though is that there are some sketchy things and at times it feels unsafe, but that is only from time to time. The schools are okay, some are better than others. The sports they have for kids and adolescents are pretty nice. There are a lot of friendly people and plenty of places to work. Also there are a lot of places to go if you want to enjoy some Read More

Not so much - 12/11/2015
I lived in Mount Vernon through the 1990s, moved to Columbus until 2013, and am currently stranded in Mount Vernon. Most of Mount Vernon is well maintained and pretty, but I grew up in this county in the 1970s knowing that any drug available anywhere else was available here. Mount Vernon has its share of crime (in proportion to population) but no TV station to publicize it.

My biggest issue with Mount Vernon is that professionalism is mostly unknown here. It's always amateur hour.

The "transit" service is basically a mismanaged shuttle with many annoying aspects. Zanesville had better transit thirty years ago when I spent a month there. The drivers and dispatchers here are relatively good for people so underpaid, but management lacks any qualification except local connections.

The hospital has good marketing and a useful helipad, but the reality is that good doctors do not stay here. There are always a few around, but it's a changing cast. Those Read More

Could be worse... - 8/3/2007
I grew up in Mount Vernon, and while I have moved away, I would not be horrified at the prospect of moving back someday. It does have some problems, but it also has good qualities that should not be overlooked.

The good:
MTV is a safe safe safe community. There is very little crime, you can walk around any part of town at any time of day and nobody will bother you. I've never been harassed by police at any time of day or night as the other poster referred to.

MTV is a beautiful town. It's located in rolling farm and forest country, and there are some lovely historical parts of town.

MTV has decent schools.

The bad:
MTV has little in the way of opportunity for younger people. The loss of manufacturing jobs has hit the town hard.

MTV has almost nothing to do. There are some bars, and if you're an older fella, there are elks and moose and eagles and all the rest, but if you're 30 and not interested in Read More

Mount Vernon is great car with no wheels - 1/25/2007
I've lived in mount vernon for almost 15 years now. I just want to say that it's full of potential. Unfortunately, the way it's run and the general ho-hum attitudes of most of the people make it hard to be friendly or excel. Let's not mention that your lucky to find a job over $10 per hour.
Don't drive at midnight... you will be pulled over and beaten with a nightstick by the barney fife local police officers. There is 2 ymca buidlings and a library, a walking trail, and a few local parks. If you want to do anything else- your gonna have to go to the local wal-mart like everyone else.
Overall, the town is fairly safe. There is some decent schools and colleges in the area. But if you want to go somewhere to excel and make friends and all that fun stuff, you may consider looking elswhere. This place reminds me of a refugee Read More
